Marriage Certificates
The traditional Quaker Certificate of marriage is a fairly
lengthy document. It records the names of the couple, their place
of residence
and the Quaker Meeting to which they belong. Parent’s names
are often included also. The date and place of the marriage are
recorded, as well as the vows exchanged by the couple. The certificate
is signed
by the couple during the Meeting for Worship. Family and guests
sign afterwards as witnesses to the marriage and in token of their
loving support.
Many other couples, although not Quaker, have adopted this tradition
of having a document which records the details of their marriage and
which all present can sign.
The Marriage Certificate, hand written in beautiful
calligraphy and often decorated with borders or flourishes, has become
an art form
in itself. All my
documents are created by hand, no computer fonts get involved! I have
created Marriage Certificates for Quaker and non-Quaker couples, for
same-sex and heterosexual couples.
Choosing
the Wording for Your Document
The Quaker Marriage Certificate always includes the names of the couple, the
place and date of the marriage, and the Meeting under whose care the marriage
is taking place. The vows exchanged and witnessed are also recorded. You can
take the wording in your YM Faith and Practice as a guide. This wording is
a suggestion only however. You are free to choose your own wording, perhaps
with
the help of your oversight committee.
Non-Quaker couples would also choose their own
wording. You may choose to have your vows recorded. You may also choose
a short poem or quotation that is meaningful to you. You will certainly
want this important document to reflect your feelings about this very
significant event in your lives. I will be happy to help with any of
these decisions.
Birth and Naming Documents
The naming of a child is a very special occasion for the
extended family, sometimes for the faith community. Like the Marriage
Certificate, naming documents are designed for the individual.
I have some examples for you to consider but yours will be unique. You
will
choose the name
of the child (of course!) and the wording of the document. You will
also want to consider whether space should be provided for family
and friends to sign the document. Personally, I feel that the document
is much more valuable when the signatures of so many loving witnesses
are included. What a treasure for a child to carry through life!
